Fiao'o Fa'amausili was the captain of the New Zealand Black Ferns, our national women’s rugby team, until 2018. The Black Ferns have been a very successful team, winning the Women’s Rugby World Cup a record five times. Wow!
Despite this success, the Black Ferns have only recently become professional rugby players who are paid to play rugby. Although they are paid, the Black Ferns make less money than members of the men’s professional rugby team - the All Blacks. This difference in pay is often called the ‘gender pay gap’ and it is not uncommon in sports.
What do you think about this?
- I think its unfair because of the effort that the Black Ferns put in as well as the All Blacks. They are playing the same game as the All Blacks. All though the Men's team has a more larger pack weight the women cans till go as fast and as powerful against the other women.
Is it fair?
-No it isn't fair.
Should female athletes, like the Black Ferns, be paid the same amount as male athletes who play the same sport?
- Yes they should be paid the same.

ReplyDeleteYou make an excellent point about the gender wage gap between the All Blacks and the Black Ferns. It does look like the men get paid more simply because they are bigger even though the women do the same job and act with equitable speed and power. Could you explain further why you think this isn’t fair? What other things could contribute to the wage gap in New Zealand rugby?
